On August 5, 2020, the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs of China issued Announcement No. 317, and 1064 more seed varieties were registered. So far, the number of registered varieties of 29 non-major crops in China has exceeded 20,000.


Since May 1, 2017, the registration system of non-major crop varieties has been officially implemented, which has fully mobilized the enthusiasm of scientific research units and seed companies for the selection and breeding of new varieties. In just three years, the number of registered varieties has reached 20,545, which is green for agriculture. High-quality development and the revitalization of rural industries have provided important support.  Since the implementation of the system, 29 crop varieties included in the first batch of registration catalogues have shown a good development trend.


The number of registered varieties of pepper was the highest, reaching 3606; watermelon followed by 2614; Chinese cabbage, sunflower, tomato varieties reached about 2000, melon and cucumber varieties were also large, with more than 1300; rape, peanut, there are 500 to 1,000 registered varieties of cabbage and sorghum. Of these registered varieties, 97.7% are independently selected varieties, demonstrating China's ability to innovate varieties.
